Why winter tires, visibility, cold-weather systems, ground clearance, and maintenance matter more than AWD alone.

Canadian assembly does not automatically make a vehicle winter-ready. Winter performance comes from the complete system: suitable tires, adequate visibility, functioning heat and defrost systems, maintained brakes and battery, sensible ground clearance, and a driver who adjusts to conditions.

Prioritize tires before drivetrain marketing

All-wheel drive can distribute power, but it cannot create grip that the tires do not have. A front-wheel-drive vehicle on appropriate winter tires may be more predictable in braking and cornering than an AWD vehicle on unsuitable tires.

Cold-weather features worth checking

  • Effective windshield, rear-window, and mirror defrosting.
  • Heated steering wheel and seats where useful, without treating them as safety equipment.
  • Washer-fluid capacity and wiper service position.
  • Headlamp performance and ease of clearing snow.
  • Battery condition or winter range planning for electrified vehicles.
  • Door-handle, sliding-door, liftgate, and charge-port behaviour in ice.

Ground clearance has trade-offs

More clearance may help in unplowed roads or deep ruts, but it also raises step-in and cargo-loading height. Most urban drivers benefit more from tires, visibility, and careful route planning than extreme off-road hardware.

Do not rely on a drive mode alone.Snow modes change throttle, transmission, and traction-control behaviour, but they do not replace appropriate tires or safe speed.
